Coinbase’s musical ad satirises the state of Britain
Directed by Steve Rogers, Everything is Fine highlights the failings of the current economic system to ask whether there is an alternative to the status quo
Crumbling homes, the cost of food, stagnating wages, redundancies, unaffordable housing: Coinbase’s new ad by Mother London paints a pretty dire picture of Britain, but its message is one that will resonate for much of the population.
Everything is Fine is an all-singing, all-dancing affair delivered in the form of a musical, culminating in a spectacular display of exploding bin bags, flying rats, and a fountain of sewage (or perhaps water – because, these days, what’s the difference?). The combination of musical theatre and unexpected lyrics gives it an air of Two Ronnies, a suitably British reference point considering the subject of the spot.
“We identified that the true problem in people’s lives isn’t any single thing, but rather the collective resignation we all hold about how things work, or don’t work – the inertia of accepting the status quo,” said Mother ECD Tom Bender. “Our aim with ‘Everything Is Fine’ is not to dictate, but to offer a suggestion: that there could be an alternative.”
Viewers may question whether crypto is necessarily the answer to these problems – many of which run much deeper than financial institutions alone – but there’s no denying the issues raised are on the money.
