World War One Remembered: Passchendaele Centenary Event by Kate Dawkins Studio

The project has been selected for the Experiential and Motion Graphics categories in The Annual 2018, CR’s award scheme celebrating the best in commercial creativity

Winning in both Motion Graphics and Experiential, this spectacular project was part of the commemorations of the centenary of Passchendaele, Third Battle of Ypres, in World War One.

It was organised by the UK’s DCMS and took place in Ypres Market square. The story of the battle was told through a multimedia show including live theatrical and musical performances. Kate Dawkins Studio created the projected elements which were displayed on the 125-metre-wide Cloth Hall.

The studio worked with AV leaders Creative Technology to deliver the story with 58 projectors used across seven towers projecting 133,632,000 pixels seamlessly across the front, clock tower and side facades of the Hall.

Nearly an hour’s worth of complex content was created, some drawing on the archive of the Imperial War Museum. Stop-motion animations of the rooms within nearby Talbot House, a wartime refuge for all soldiers to rest and relax in, also featured, as did hand-animated vignettes which formed a backdrop for excerpts from the play War Horse.

“Our process started with the brief that the event was aimed at a more contemporary audience needing to communicate the uniqueness and significance of this particular battle. But our main role was to deliver the right tone of voice to accompany such a remarkable poignant event,” the studio says.
