86½ Years website by Clubhouse Studios
This project was selected in the Digital – Websites category in The Annual 2018, CR’s award scheme celebrating the best in commercial creativity
The book I’ve lived in London for 86½ years was published by Hoxton Mini Press in 2014. The first to be published by the imprint, it documented the three-year friendship between HMP founder Martin Usborne and Joseph Markovitch, an East London pensioner who’d lived in the area his whole life.
Markovitch passed away in 2013. In the year that he would have turned 90, this site set out to celebrate the relationship he and Usborne shared.
It follows a dual narrative. Each chapter is split into two parts, and can be navigated using a webcam and eye-tracking technology. Closing the eyes takes the user into Markovitch’s imagination, as he begins to share his musings from an eclectic mix of topics ranging from relationships to the universe.
As he finishes talking, opening the eyes reveals the original photograph Usborne took to accompany Markovitch’s words, alongside the photographer’s memories of the moment they shared.
As a final enhancement, foley recordings captured at each of the locations where the original photographs were taken play, completing a remarkable, full-sensory digital experience that honours the spirit of the original journal.
