MahaNakhon Installation by Pentagram
This project was selected in the Digital – Experiential category in The Annual 2018, CR’s award scheme celebrating the best in commercial creativity
MahaNahkon is a new 77-storey high-rise mixed-use complex in Bangkok. Eddie Opara and team at Pentagram New York designed a programme of environmental graphics for it, including dynamic digital installations for CUBE, the building’s retail component.
The CUBE has a square facade, spanning 10 storeys, that is fully covered with a grid of LED displays. A custom typeface was created, where each letter can expand or contract in size, covering 1, 2, 4, or 6 spaces in the grid depending on the intended scale. A custom icon system was also created to accompany the typeface.
The screen is interactive and can be operated via touch screens inside the CUBE building. Users can upload Instagram photos and control colours and other elements on the facade screen. A full operation schedule was created based on the flow of traffic and pedestrians and on major events and news, among other factors. It appears as a fully autonomous display, with content such as weather, the stock market and news.
