Pink Floyd: The Early Years 1965–1972 by Pentagram Design
This project was selected for the Design – Packaging category in The Annual 2018,CR’s award scheme celebrating the best in commercial creativity
This comprehensive 27-disc box set from Pentagram Partner Harry Pearce pulls together material from the Pink Floyd archive, as well as licensed radio and TV recordings and previously unreleased material, in a deluxe package that includes seven individual book-style volumes.
Pearce was briefed on the project, which also includes an identity for label Pink Floyd Records, by Aubrey Powell, partner with Storm Thorgerson in Hipgnosis, the design studio that created Pink Floyd’s album covers. Each of the seven CD booklet covers carries an original artwork by painter John Whiteley, in his distinct psychedelic style (Whiteley is a friend and contemporary of Powell).
Typewriter-esque typography creates an archival aesthetic while the outer packaging’s white diagonal stripe on black is a reference to a van once owned by the band, a photograph of which is featured inside along with others from the band’s long history.
