Anya Hindmarch has unveiled the latest addition to the brand’s ‘village’ of shops in Chelsea, London. Drawing on the nostalgia of adolescence and school, the new destination is called Anya’s Tuck Shop, and it offers visitors a trip down memory lane, and a chance to pick up some retro-inspired goods.

“Back to school were never words that brought me much joy … until now,” says Hindmarch. “I have had so much fun exploring the subject of school. The graphics, the graffiti, the stationery and the stash. And this time it is all play and no work.”

Located in the same building where Hindmarch has previously brought to life a wacky ice cream parlour, a 1970s-style garden centre, and a Peanuts-themed space, Anya’s Tuck Shop is a concept store built around the experience of returning to school – both the literal experience, and the nostalgic trip for older audiences that it offers.

Featured within the space are custom-made products by Hindmarch, such as pencil cases bearing the logos of iconic confectionary brands like Kit-Kat, Nerds and Skips, as well as Mini Cheddars, Sun-Maid Raisins and Penguin bag charms. Much like previous concepts realised within this space, Anya’s Tuck Shop leans on the brands the designer – and many others in the UK – grew up with.

In an interview with Creative Review last year, Hindmarch commented that the allure of these heritage brands is in their nostalgic appeal: “So many people have said that Penguin reminds them of their childhood lunchbox, Sarson’s takes them to their seaside chips on British holidays. I think that sense of nostalgia is a powerful one to bring back memories.”

Along with the food-related items at the Tuck Shop, are uniform-inspired accessories such as a wool scarf and PE socks that feature the colours and designs of the fictional Chelsea County Grammar School that forms the centrepoint of the collection. There are also numerous badges and stickers that can be pinned to clothing or stuck on backpacks.

Speaking of bags, an Anya Hindmarch concept store wouldn’t be complete without the release of an accompanying bag. For this project there is a special edition of the brand’s Universal Bag, which comes in a small and large size and bears the distinctive stripes of a classic school tie.

Finally, for those looking to pick up the kind of sweet and savoury treats that you would typically find in a tuck shop, there are a range of consumable items on offer, including organic fizzy pops created in collaboration with Karma Drinks, lots of old-school ‘penny sweets’ to fill up on, and specially-packaged Yorkshire Crisps.
